12th February 2005 ride to Parkamoor and Grizedale
Looking back on the public byway to Parkamoor

After meeting at the car park on the race course at Cartmel, the eight of us (this included Steve Griffith our Public Relations Officer up from London and new member Sandra Waterhouse from Halton.) headed out of Cartmel along lanes to Cark, where we stop for morning coffee at the café at the South Lakeland Nurseries, where we met Tony Greenbank, a freelance journalist who was doing an article on the Group and the Fellowship for the Cumbria Magazine that sister magazine to the Dalesman (Dalesman website is www.dalesman.co.uk ).
After about half hour of chat, Tony notebook was getting full with cycling terms and other pearls of wisdom about the RSF we head out of door of the café and collected our bikes. We then had short photo stop where Tony took several photos of us for the magazine.
We then headed up the B5278 towards Haverthwaite, at GR 345836 we turn on to the Cumbria Cycleway where we met Tony Greenbank for another photo shoot, we then followed the cycleway through to Greenodd, where Tony took a few more photos of us crossing and recrossing the foot / cycle bridge across the River Leven with those in bright colours at the front.
After another short stop in Greenodd for Steve to buy is lunch at local bakery, we soon turn off the A5092 and followed the lanes up the Crake Valley to Spark Bridge where we had another photo shoot with Tony, with four members pretending to repairs to Rob Burrows bike.
We told Tony that we were headed up to High Nibthwaite next that he could meet us there, when we got there he was no where to be found and I later found out he followed another group of cyclists up the valley and by the time he caught them up (he later met Steve at the Youth hostel in Coniston) we were following the track up on to Parkamoor, after cycling through or going around some flooded sections of the track it was soon lunch time which we had beside the track sat on newly saw logs.
We soon on our way again with Brian leading at the front and Cliff and Rob at the rear, we soon rewarded with fine views of Coniston Water a few hundred foot below us and across lake views of Walna Scar and The Old Man of Coniston. We were blow across Parkamoor, to the boundary of Grizedale Forest where it took few seconds to close the gate due to the strength of the wind. We soon make our way down into Grizedale and along on to Moor Lane. We rejoin the tarmac just below Setterthwaite Bridge where Sandra left us to head back to the cars at Cartmel.
The rest of us headed up the valley to the Grizedale Centre, for afternoon tea at the Café in the Forest, afterwards Steve left us to head back to the Youth Hostel at Coniston and the rest of the party follow the lanes back to Haverthwaite via Satterthwaite, Force Mills, Thwaite Head, Crosslands and down the Rusland Valley. After passing through Haverthwaite we turn off the B5278 and climb up to High Gate and then enjoy the long free wheel down to the cars at Cartmel.
