13th August 2005 ride Mosedale and Wet Sleddale
Ride report by Pat Lloyd
A wet start from the Kendal Leisure Centre and early coffee stop at Morrisons Supermarket. We were able to discard the water proofs halfway up Long Sleddale and the day rapidly improved with bright sunshine in the afternoon. A hard ride up alongside the waterfalls of the River Sprinted was enlivened by Cliff reminiscing about rock climbing on the Buck barrow Crag on our right and once we were pushing up over the slabs he told us that they had been laid by Italian prisoners of war who were working in the quarries at the top. Once at the bridleway sign near the foot of Gatescarth Pass we turn right to squelsh through the rushes of Brownhove Bottom and climb the coll above Mosedale before dropping down for a late lunch at Mosedale Cottage where I was pleased to see that in spite of my efforts at slate trimming during the rebuilding that the roof was still water tight .

Luckily the plank bridge was till in place for crossing of Mosedale Beck. A short climb up the hillside brought us to the start of Wet Sleddale and the long rideable track past the reservoir still full in spite of the dry weather.
A short spell on the A6 then onto the bridleway through the granite works following the original main road before rejoining the A6 for a swoop down to Huck’s Bridge. A short climb and back on tracks and a series of lanes bringing us back on the main road for the last few miles back into Kendal.
