In the absence of Rob and Simeon I ‘volunteered’ as stand in run leader. So you can imagine my pride, on turning up at Bullbeck car park, to be met by dozens of cyclists. A record turnout competing with a Easter Meet rather than a normal area run. The Merit shield’s all mine I think.
However, the swelled head didn’t last long when I found that we had coincided with the start of an audax event. So nine of us set off through Brookhouse, up the road above Littledale and the drop-climb-drop-climb, via Haylot Farm to start the Salter Fell track. An old, high level drovers road it climbs/undulates, upwards for about six miles before dropping, sometimes rough and steep, for the next two down towards Slaidburn. The day was dry and quite warm but looking back the normally good views of the three peaks were decidedly murky.
The trail has been reinstated in recent years following considerable damage by 4 x 4’s and trail motorbikes. Near the top we chatted to two guys on mtb’s with a small Jack Russell running alongside. I was thinking that its legs were a bit short for such a long run.
After Salter it was all tarmac. First to Dunsop Bridge, for a brew at Puddleducks, then up and over the Trough of Bowland and through Abbeystead back to Bullbeck. Starting the Trough climb we again met the two mtb guys with the Jack Russell, enjoying the fast descent peering out from one of their panniers. At the top of the climb we were cooled down by a short sharp thunderstorm.
Overall a good day even without the turnout. Thanks to all.
