9th April 2005 ride around Borrowdale and Bretherdale

After café stop in Sedbergh, for the benefit of Steve Griffth our new chairman who just rode over from Slaidburn where he was staying at the Youth Hostel for the weekend. The six of us headed out of Sedbergh along Howgill Lane and then along the Fairmile Road. With few stops to look at the views, the scenery in the upper part of the Lune Valley is always stunning even on a wet day! Which many people forget has they bomb up the M6 to the North Lakes and Scotland. We were soon dropping down to Salterwath Bridge to cross over the River Lune, then passing through the hamlet of Low Borrowbridge and then crossover the A685 to enter one of most beautiful dale in Cumbria, it was surprise to fine that I was the only person in the party to been up Borrowdale.
Having passed through Low Borrowdale Farm andHigh Borrowdale Farm we carry on a bit further up the valley before stopping for the lunch by Borrow Beck.
After lunch we continue up the valley towards the A6, we soon stop to watch our chairman taking a short cut via the ford to crossover Borrow Beck to the Breasthigh Road, the water was bit to deep and cold for the rest of us, so we took a short detour via the A6 and rejoin him on the other side.
We continue up the Breasthigh Road, which is steep climb out of Borrowdale but well worth it for the views of Morecambe Bay and the South Lakes. At the summit the party regroup before dropping down into Bretherdale where we rejoin the tarmac. After short detour to look at the old footbridge which crosses over Bretherdale Beck, we continue down Breatherdale and then followed the lanes along the Lune Valley back to Sedbergh and the cars.
